Zoo Update from GLAZA President Tom Jacobson – May 2023

The Greater Los Angeles Zoo Association (GLAZA) is delighted to share some exciting updates about the Los Angeles Zoo.

Conservation Education
Under the leadership of GLAZA, the Zoo continues to be a clear leader in conservation education. Every year, hundreds of thousands of students and visitors come to the Zoo to learn more about wildlife conservation, animal behavior, and the importance of environmental protection. We are constantly adding new experiences and educational programs to our lineup, including an expanded animal ambassador program featuring personalized encounters with some of the world’s rarest and most fascinating species.

New Exhibit: African Savanna
The African Savanna exhibit, a new GLAZA-funded development, is nearing its final stages of completion and is set to open to visitors in August 2023. It will feature several magnificent African species, including giraffes, zebras, and ostriches. With this exhibit, the Zoo seeks to bring African wildlife closer to visitors and inspire more extraordinary conservation efforts on the continent.

Animal Care and Welfare
The Zoo takes animal welfare very seriously and is proud to have received many awards and accreditations for its animal care and welfare practices. In 2023, we significantly upgraded the facilities and care routines to ensure that all animals in the Zoo’s care are thriving.

Community Support
GLAZA is grateful for the continuous support from the local community. In May 2023, we announced a significant partnership with a local business that will help support the Zoo’s conservation and education missions. This partnership will ensure that the Zoo can continue to play a critical role in providing education and connection to wilderness and wildlife.

Conclusion
As always, the Zoo offers an enjoyable and educational experience for visitors of all ages. We are confident that our future developments, care protocols, and community partnerships will keep the Los Angeles Zoo at the forefront of global zoology. We look forward to welcoming you soon!
