This peculiar creature, neither bear nor cat, strikes an impressive figure with its thick black fur, expressive whiskers, and unusual prehensile tail.
Swinging through the trees of Southeast Asia’s rainforests, the Binturong lives at its own pace. They are remarkably agile climbers, with their bodies stretching up to 38 inches and their tails adding an extra 33 inches. Acting like a fifth limb, that tail helps them negotiate the dense treetops where they munch on various delicacies. Fruits, particularly figs, leaves, eggs, birds—nothing is off-limits for this versatile omnivore.
Life in the wild is tough, and the Binturong usually sees a lifespan of 10-15 years, but in managed care, this can stretch over 20 years. These females have a fascinating reproductive trick up their sleeve—they can delay the implantation of their embryos, timing birth perfectly.
