After 12 vibrant and educational weeks, our summer interns are concluding their tenure at the Zoo, ready to embark on new adventures armed with valuable experiences. These summer interns spent time in varied departments, enriching their professional journeys and imparting their dynamic insights.

Our internship program aims to offer a comprehensive, hands-on experience across different departments within the Zoo. This year, the focus ranged from behavioral husbandry and education to public relations and IT. Each intern played a crucial role, contributing with fresh ideas and enthusiasm.

Understanding the intricacies of behavioral husbandry and its role in conservation and animal welfare is fundamental for anyone interested in zoology. Our interns engaged in detailed animal care routines, learning about the unique behavioral needs of different species. They practiced positive reinforcement techniques, which are vital for stress-free animal management. These activities not only benefit the animals but also provide crucial data to inform future husbandry practices.

Education is another cornerstone of our mission. Interns collaborated on developing educational programs tailored to various audience segments, from young schoolchildren to adult visitors. They assisted in conducting interactive sessions, aimed at raising awareness about wildlife conservation and the importance of preserving natural habitats. This integration of education into the Zoo’s daily operations helps foster a deeper connection between the public and wildlife.

The interns also contributed significantly to our public relations and IT departments. In PR, they were involved in content creation, event planning, and engaging the community through various media channels. Their innovative approaches helped amplify our conservation messages and reach a broader audience. Meanwhile, the IT interns worked on improving our digital infrastructure, implementing new technologies to enhance visitor experience and streamline internal processes. These contributions have lasting impacts, both in enhancing operational efficiency and in supporting our communication strategies.

Looking forward, we are excited about the potential future collaborations with our former interns. The diverse skills and enthusiasm they brought have been invaluable, and we are eager to see how they apply their experiences in their future careers. We encourage anyone interested in animal care, education, public relations, or IT to explore our internship opportunities. More information is available at okczoo.org/careers.

By providing a well-rounded, immersive experience, the program equips interns with the knowledge and skills necessary for their professional development. We are grateful for the fresh perspectives and dedication our interns brought to the Zoo. Their contributions have made a significant impact, and we look forward to continuing to support their growth in the field of wildlife conservation.
