Welcome to today’s Zoo to You program, where we have a special guest to introduce you to – Handsome the Hornbill! This magnificent bird is stunning and plays an important role in conservation efforts supported by Zoo New England.

At Zoo New England, we are proud to be part of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums’ global collaborative conservation effort, SAFE: Saving Animals From Extinction. One of the programs under SAFE is the Asian Hornbill SAFE Program, which aims to ensure the sustainability of wild Asian hornbill populations in their natural habitats.

Conservation actions supported by our partnership with AZA include various initiatives to protect and enhance the hornbill’s natural habitat. These initiatives include developing conservation action plans for the species, protecting nest sites, implementing community-based forest warden programs, and conducting biodiversity assessments and population surveys. Additionally, artificial nests are provided to help supplement the in-situ breeding efforts of hornbills.

One of the reasons we are focusing on Handsome the Hornbill for today’s Zoo to You program is to raise awareness about these efforts and highlight this species’ incredible beauty and uniqueness. The hornbill is truly a sight to behold with its vibrant plumage and distinctive bill.

Did you know that hornbills are one of the few bird species with eyelashes? Yes, you heard that right! These eyelashes enhance their already charming appearance and serve a practical purpose. They help prevent debris from getting into their eyes as they fly through dense forests. This is just one of the many fascinating facts about Handsome and his kin.

In addition to their fabulous eyelashes, hornbills are known for their impressive bill. This bill is not only visually striking but also serves several essential functions. It helps the hornbill break open fruits, catch insects, and establish their territory through loud calls. It’s truly an all-in-one tool vital for the hornbill’s survival.

Another unique aspect of Handsome’s species is their nesting behavior. Hornbills are cavity nesters, which means they lay their eggs and raise their chicks in tree hollows. However, they stand out because they seal the nest entrance with a mixture of mud, droppings, and fruit pulp while the female incubates the eggs. This sealed enclosure protects the female and her chicks during this vulnerable period.

By featuring Handsome the Hornbill in our Zoo to You program, we hope to inspire and educate people about the importance of wildlife conservation. It’s not just about admiring these creatures’ beauty but also understanding their role in maintaining ecological balance.

Conservation efforts like those supported by the Asian Hornbill SAFE Program are crucial for ensuring the survival of both hornbills and countless other species that rely on healthy habitats. Our commitment to conservation extends beyond our zoo’s boundaries, aiming to make a lasting impact on wildlife populations worldwide.

So, the next time you visit one of our zoos, take a moment to appreciate Handsome and other incredible animals you encounter. They are not just here for our entertainment but serve as ambassadors for their species, reminding us of the importance of protecting their homes.

Remember to follow us on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and TikTok to stay updated on our latest conservation initiatives and meet more fascinating creatures like Handsome. Together, we can make a difference and ensure the survival of these beautiful creatures for generations to come.
