Please join us in wishing Jasiri, the Endangered reticulated giraffe, a very happy third birthday! Jasiri, a beautiful and brave giraffe, has become a beloved member of the Denver Zoo family since his arrival last October. Today, we celebrate this special occasion and look at the fascinating world of Reticulated Giraffes.
But before we dive into the enchanting world of giraffes, we have an important operational update to share. Starting Monday, August 7, the pathway in front of the giraffe and zebra habitats in Central Ranges will undergo construction and will remain closed until around August 25. We apologize for any inconvenience caused and appreciate your patience as we work towards improving the zoo experience for everyone.
Now, let’s turn our attention to Jasiri and the incredible species he belongs to. Reticulated Giraffes, named for their distinctive and intricate coat patterns, is one of the nine subspecies of giraffes found across Africa. Their elongated necks and incredibly long legs make them the tallest land animals on our planet. They can reach heights of up to 18 feet and run up to 35 miles per hour!
Did you know that giraffes possess unique adaptations that enable them to survive in their environment? Their long necks, for instance, are not just for reaching leaves high up in trees but also serve as excellent thermoregulators. This means that during the hot African days, giraffes can cool themselves down by increasing blood flow to the brain, where heat exchange occurs. Pretty amazing, right?
Unfortunately, Reticulated Giraffes, like Jasiri, are currently classified as endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). Habitat loss, poaching, and human-wildlife conflict pose serious threats to their population. However, we can make a difference through the dedicated efforts of zoos, conservation organizations, and passionate individuals.
In collaboration with the Giraffe Species Survival Plan recommended by Zoos and Aquariums, Denver Zoo actively participates in giraffe conservation initiatives. By providing a safe and nurturing environment for giraffes like Jasiri, we contribute to their well-being and educate visitors about the importance of conservation. We firmly believe that every individual can play a role in protecting these gentle giants.
So, how can you get involved and support our mission? There are several ways! Firstly, by visiting Denver Zoo, you get to see Jasiri and his herd and contribute to the funding needed for their care and conservation programs. Every ticket sold goes directly towards ensuring the welfare of the animals and supporting vital research and conservation efforts.
Moreover, becoming a member of Denver Zoo allows you unlimited access to the animals and behind-the-scenes experiences while also providing essential financial support for our mission. Additionally, you can explore our various education programs and volunteer opportunities where you can actively contribute to the well-being of animals and their conservation.
Lastly, staying connected with us through our social media platforms and newsletters helps you stay updated with the latest news, events, and initiatives at Denver Zoo. By spreading awareness about the importance of wildlife conservation and giraffe protection, you become an advocate for these magnificent creatures.
As we celebrate Jasiri’s third birthday today, remember that each year is a milestone for this endangered species. By coming together, supporting zoos like Denver Zoo, and spreading awareness, we can ensure a brighter future for Reticulated Giraffes and other endangered wildlife.
We thank you for joining us on this exciting journey and encourage you to continue supporting our conservation efforts. Together, we can make a difference in the lives of these incredible animals. Happy Birthday, Jasiri! 🦒

⚠️ OPERATIONAL UPDATE ⚠️ Beginning Monday, August 7, we will be updating the pathway in front of the giraffe and zebra habitats in Central Ranges. Once construction begins, all guests will be rerouted behind Pinnacol African Penguin Point and in front of the Felines buildings to avoid the pathway closure. We anticipate that the initial pathway closure will last until August 25. We appreciate your patience and understanding as we build a better Zoo for you!
