Behind the Scenes of Melur’s Pregnancy Journey

We’re taking you behind the scenes on orangutan Melur’s pregnancy journey – from the initial pre-pregnancy health exam at our vet hospital to the successful birth of her and Charlie’s baby.

Pre-Pregnancy Health Exam

Melur’s pre-pregnancy health exam was conducted with help from an expert sonographer. The exam detailed the great care our primate team provides these great apes, which went into all aspects of pregnancy and birth.

Positive-Reinforcement Training

To ensure the safety of Melur and her baby, our primate keepers and vet team provided crucial positive-reinforcement training with Melur. This training enabled the team to assist if Melur or the baby needed medical intervention.

Witnessing the Milestones

Our primate keeper Sarah explains that this is such a special and rare opportunity for our staff and visitors to watch as Bahmi grows and develops – and we look forward to it as he reaches more milestones in the coming months.
