Mom’s the Word: Spotlight on Animal Mothers at Zoos!

Our first stop is the lion’s den—quite literally! Meet our star mama, the lioness, who carries her cubs for around 110 days before introducing them to the world. Post-birth, the cubs depend on their mother, from sustenance to protection. Talk about the ultimate community childcare! Here’s a heart-melting fact: lionesses are known to form ‘crèches’—a cooperative care system where lionesses look after each other’s cubs.
Waddling along, we spot the mother emperor penguin—the one that braves the Antarctic chill to hatch her egg! She fasts for two months, standing in temperatures that could freeze our hot coffee in seconds. Why? To make sure her little one is safe and snug. Chilly but charming, wouldn’t you agree?
Swinging into the primate section, we find the orangutan mothers—quite the superheroes! They’re single moms raising their young alone in the dense forests of Borneo and Sumatra. Orangutan babies stick to their mothers like glue for about eight years, learning the ropes of survival. What patience, what perseverance!
Did you know seahorses flip the script when it comes to parenting? TSeahorse moms – silently steering the ship! The males carry the eggs, but let’s not ignore the female’s role. She carefully transfers her eggs into the male’s pouch and visits him daily while he carries their brood.
Over at the elephant enclosure, we find the ultimate matriarch. Female elephants or ‘cows’ have one of the most extended gestational periods in the animal kingdom—almost 22 months! Elephant herds led by a dominant female are textbook examples of cooperative parenting, with aunties, sisters, and cousins pitching in to care for the young.
From the trees to the seas, the plains to the skies, the tapestry of motherhood in the wild is as varied as it’s beautiful. But we mustn’t forget that many of these awe-inspiring creatures face threats in the wild, such as habitat loss, climate change, and poaching.
Zoos, with their conservation and breeding programs, provide a haven for these animals.
