Nestled within the dense, verdant forests of the Arakan Mountains in western Myanmar and parts of Bangladesh, a creature whose story reads like a tale of resurrection prowls. The Arakan Forest Turtle, a living testament to tenacity and mystery, moves silently across the forest floor. For years, this enigmatic turtle was a phantom, its presence solely known from shells and whispers of its existence.
The rediscovery of the Arakan Forest Turtle in 1994 reads like a suspense novel, with the species dramatically reappearing after decades of believed extinction. Its initial unearthing at an Asian food market ignited a spark of hope and a flurry of questions. How did this turtle, presumed lost to time, elude detection for many years?
The turtle’s ability to blend into its environment is astonishing. Its carapace, a mosaic of earthy hues ranging from dark brown to a mellow tan, doubles as an effective cloak against the backdrop of its habitat’s decaying foliage and rich soil. Remarkably, this turtle has tailored its lifestyle to become chiefly nocturnal, an attribute that likely contributed to its prolonged obscurity.
With a slow, measured pace, the Arakan Forest Turtle embarks upon nightly sojourns for sustenance and adventure. It’s a primarily carnivorous creature, capitalizing on the ample insects, invertebrates, and fallen fruit the forest obligingly provides. Dawn signals a retreat to the safety of the undercover, where the turtle ensconces itself beneath layers of leaves to escape the searing midday sun.
But the Arakan Forest Turtle isn’t merely “another forest-dwelling reptile.” It stands out with specialized traits that hint at the complexity of evolution. Take, for instance, its long, razor-sharp claws. These aren’t mere ornamental appendages but essential tools for navigating the rugged terrain of its mountainous home. Scaling steep slopes and cleaving to precarious perches, these claws are a testament to the creature’s adaptation and survival instinct.
However, the clandestine nature of this turtle does little to shield it from the threats faced by many species worldwide. Habitat destruction relentlessly encroaches on its secret refuges. The demand from the pet trade poses a sinister, ever-present danger. Conservation efforts, therefore, are not merely a gentle push for betterment but an urgent call to action.
The Turtle Survival Alliance is a beacon of hope in the shadows of despair. By establishing assurance colonies at selected facilities, the alliance offers a glimmer of a future for the Arakan Forest Turtle. These sanctuaries, located within the turtle’s native range, echo the natural world from which the turtles have been plucked, giving them a backyard designed by Mother Nature.
At these conservatories, life begins anew for the turtles. Researchers and caretakers practice the delicate art of ex-situ conservation, a dance of balancing the wildness of the animals with the safety of controlled habitats. The Turtle Rescue Center in May Myo and the Rakhine Yoma Elephant Range in Gwa are strongholds for these efforts in Myanmar. Similarly, the Turtle Conservation Center in Bhawal National Park, Bangladesh, expands this lifeline, fostering hope that stretches across political borders.
The task is monumental, yet the resolve of those behind these programs is fiercer than the challenges they face. They strive to understand the mysteries of the turtle’s behavior, nutrition, and breeding preferences, educate local communities, rally cooperation, and instill appreciation for this forest dweller. This is a story not just of survival but of coexistence.
Accessibility to these wondrous creatures is understandably limited to protect them. Yet, even in their hidden havens, the Arakan Forest Turtle has much to teach us. The existence of these turtles underscores the interconnectedness of our world. They are the subtle gardeners of their habitat, dispersers of seeds, and connectors in a food web that spans the forest. Inadvertently, they foster diversity, a crucial aspect of any thriving ecosystem.
What can we learn from the story of the Arakan Forest Turtle? It offers more than just intrigue and fascination; it is symbolic of the resilience of nature and the boundless potential for recovery. This turtle reminds us that adversity is a universal language, and so too is persistence. Their continuation, against the odds, stirs a sense of responsibility in us—an awakening to the fragility and wonder of life.
The re-emergence of the Arakan Forest Turtle serves as a clarion call for global conservation efforts. It punctuates the importance of continued research, relentless protection, and unwavering support for these species’ roles in the mosaic of biodiversity. And perhaps, most of all, it is a signpost pointing toward the need for humanity to act as stewards of the natural world, not merely as inhabitants or exploiters.
As we ponder the fate of the Arakan Forest Turtle, let us also reflect on the future we craft with every decision, from policy to personal practice. This turtle’s journey from the brink of extinction to a symbol of hope is a tale we can author, one in which we ultimately define not only the survival of a species but the legacy of our relationship with nature.
And so, with each step taken through the leaf-littered corridors of its range, the Arakan Forest Turtle carves a path forward for us all. The silent whisper of its movement, the grace with which it confronts the perils of its existence, becomes an anthem for the enduring spirit of our planet’s wildlife. Indomitable. Inspiring. Incandescent.
In our hands, we can continue penning this story of resurgence and redemption. What will we write next? The pages are still blank, and as the canopy rustles above, the Arakan Forest Turtle waits, a silent witness to our choices.

Our is the Arakan Forest Turtle!
This Critically Endangered turtle is named for the Arakan Mountains of western Myanmar and is native to Bangladesh. Camouflaged by its dark brown skin and dark brown to tan carapace, this turtle blends into the leafy forest floor it traverses. This turtle has been observed burrowing under leaves during the hottest parts of the day and is largely active at night.
These turtles look similar to other species native to the same area, like Asian Giant Tortoises (when young), but have certain traits that set them apart, such as long, sharp claws that allow them to climb through rugged terrain.
Due to habitat destruction, collection for the pet trade, and lack of access to priority areas, this species was presumed extinct for decades. Still, in 1994, it was rediscovered in the Asian food market. Establishing assurance colonies and protected breeding facilities have increased its populations.
Turtle Survival Alliance supports multiple facilities of assurance colonies across this species’ native areas:
🐢Turtle Rescue Center in May Myo and the Rakhine Yoma Elephant Range in Gwa in collaboration with the Myanmar Biodiversity Fund
🐢Turtle Conservation Center in Bhawal National Park, Bangladesh, in collaboration with Creative Conservation Alliance @creativeconservationalliance and Bangladesh Forest Department
We also have a pair of these turtles at our Turtle Survival Center as a part of our ex situ breeding program.
