Hello there! Rachael here, a member of the Ambassador Animals Team at Zoo Atlanta. Today, I want to share Armadillo Enrichment’s unique and fascinating aspects. Armadillos are incredible creatures native to the Americas, and here at the zoo, we have two species – the southern three-banded armadillo and the screaming hairy armadillo.
Armadillos are typically found in grasslands and scrublands of South America. In Georgia, the most common species is the nine-banded armadillo. These intelligent animals are incredibly curious, so we put much effort into their enrichment activities and training.
We are proud to have two resident three-banded armadillos at Wieland Wildlife Home. You might have even seen Finnegan during your visit to Zoo Atlanta. He is 8 years old, still considered young for an armadillo, as they can live up to 15 or 16 years. Violetta, on the other hand, is a retired ambassador at 24. She spends her days in a window box with plenty of space to dig and a fantastic view of all the squirrels and birds.
Enrichment plays a significant role in the lives of our armadillos. One of the most common forms of enrichment they receive is food puzzles. Like your dog at home, we provide them with fun feeders and food bowls covered in newspaper, encouraging them to use their digging skills. We also offer them multiple food bowls and a combination of other enrichments to keep them mentally stimulated.
Moving on to our screaming hairy armadillo, meet Harriet! She is 6 years old and always full of energy. You can often spot her exploring and sniffing around her outdoor habitat. Harriet is particularly engaged when it comes to enrichment activities. Our keepers continuously develop new ways to challenge her, as she tends to solve food puzzles quickly. Harriet also enjoys training sessions and has learned various behaviors, such as targeting, stationing, and voluntary kenneling.
As insectivores, armadillos specialize in digging, using their large front claws to find tasty bugs. To mimic their natural behavior, we ensure they have enough substrate in their habitats to dig and burrow. We also provide them with boxes stuffed with newspaper and plenty of hides. Finnegan and Harriet live in their outdoor areas, where they can often be seen digging in the sand. Finnegan particularly enjoys burrowing under a tree stump in his home. We may offer them different substrates or dig boxes when indoors to satisfy their digging instincts.
Armadillos may not be the first creatures that come to mind when we think of intelligence and curiosity, but our ambassadors continue to prove otherwise. Finnegan, Violetta, and Harriet have taught me how clever and curious they can be. Every day, they surprise us with their willingness to explore new things, and as keepers, we strive to do the same for them.
In conclusion, armadillo enrichment at Zoo Atlanta is essential to providing a stimulating environment for these intelligent creatures. We ensure our armadillos receive the mental and physical stimulation they need to thrive through food puzzles, training sessions, and dedicated habitats that allow digging and burrowing. It’s truly a joy to witness their curiosity and intelligence in action, and we continue to learn new and exciting things from them daily.
Thank you for joining me on this armadillo adventure! Keep exploring and discovering the fascinating world of wildlife.
