BB’s baby giraffe has arrived after an eagerly awaited 444 days, bringing hope and vitality to the conservation efforts of reticulated giraffes. On the morning of March 7, BB, a new mother, gave birth to a healthy male calf. The birth of this giraffe calf, which took place at our zoo, also celebrates the first-time parenthood for both BB and Jasiri. This remarkable event holds profound significance, not just for BB and Jasiri, but also for the broader reticulated giraffe species. These majestic animals face their own set of challenges in the wild, with numbers dwindling due to habitat loss and poaching.
The event comes against the backdrop of coordinated global efforts to assist endangered species. The Giraffe Species Survival Plan, an initiative managed by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (@zoos_aquariums), played a pivotal role here. This program focuses on managing and conserving a genetically viable population of giraffes within accredited zoos. Through recommendations from this plan, BB and Jasiri were brought together from Cheyenne Mountain Zoo and Lee Richardson Zoo, respectively. This collaborative breeding effort aims to bolster the genetic diversity and sustain the population of giraffes across institutions. By maintaining a thriving population in captivity, there is an opportunity to support conservation and educational initiatives that can benefit the species globally.
On the care and management front, BB and her newborn are in excellent hands. The new family is currently in a designated indoor habitat within the zoo. Here, they gain crucial bonding time away from the immediate curiosities of the public. This facility grants BB the tranquility to nurture her calf, which is essential after birth. Our expert Animal Care Specialists monitor their health and well-being, ensuring that both mother and calf are thriving. This initial seclusion is a critical phase, as it allows the calf to adjust to its new environment while under constant watch by the specialists. This strategic approach highlights the critical components of zoo management and animal welfare, serving as a model for similar institutions worldwide.
As part of bringing this intimate and heartwarming aspect of wildlife conservation to a broader audience, technological advancements such as livestreaming play a transformative role. This giraffe calf has not only sparked joy among those physically present at the zoo but also across global digital platforms. By providing a livestream link, the zoo connects giraffe enthusiasts to BB and her baby, catering to both local visitors and international giraffe fans. This move underscores the intersection of modern technology and traditional zoological practices, expanding reach and enhancing public interest.
Community engagement remains an integral aspect of modern wildlife conservation efforts, wherein public involvement becomes pivotal. The zoo is delighted to involve the community in the naming process for the new giraffe calf. This initiative, presented through Zoo Tales and the Baby Bulletin, invites public participation, fostering a closer connection between the community and the wildlife within the zoo. Naming contests not only help increase awareness but also drive support for conservation programs. Moreover, the public can actively back the zoo’s initiatives, ensuring ongoing support for both the giraffe species and broader conservation goals.
By supporting our zoo, visitors and global fans contribute to an essential mission—preserving endangered wildlife and advocating for a sustainable future. The significance of BB’s baby giraffe extends beyond its immediate environment, symbolizing hope and collective human effort in wildlife conservation. As BB and her calf prepare for their public debut, we eagerly anticipate witnessing not only their growth but also the positive impact they will have on conservation education and awareness.

BB’s baby is here! After 444 days, we’re delighted to announce the long-awaited arrival of our reticulated giraffe calf! 🦒 🧡 🤎
New mom BB gave birth in the morning of Friday, March 7, to a healthy baby boy. First-time parents BB and Jasiri joined us in 2022 from @cheyennemountainzoo and @leerichardsonzoo on a breeding recommendation from @zoos_aquariums ’ Giraffe Species Survival Plan. The successful arrival of this baby has given a much-needed boost to the Endangered species.
Our Animal Care Specialists are happy to share that BB and her baby are thriving behind-the-scenes. For now, they’ll remain in their cozy indoor habitat before meeting the rest of the herd—dad Jasiri and ‘uncle’ Dobby—ahead of their public debut in the coming weeks. To give mom and baby time to bond and acclimate, the indoor giraffe habitat will be temporarily closed to guests.
But don’t worry, you will still be able to catch all the cuteness! A livestream link will be available on-campus for our guests and members and online for giraffe fans around the world. Stay tuned for updates!
