The Seneca Park Zoo in New York is home to one bearded dragon as part of their ambassador animal program. Bearded dragons can grow up to 2 feet in length, with males being larger than females. They have an expandable throat pouch called a “beard” and flatten their bodies and stand erect when intimidated. They are omnivorous and found in semi-arid forests of Australia, with a least concern conservation status. The Seneca Park Zoo houses a range of other animals from around the world, including African bush vipers, elephants, and lions.
As a zoo keeper, one of the coolest creatures I get to work with are bearded dragons! These fun and curious lizards make great pets due to their ease of care and personality. Here’s some facts about bearded dragons that anyone would find interesting.
Bearded dragons originate from the deserts of Australia and can live up to 10 years when cared for properly. They grow quite large for lizards, ranging anywhere from 14-24 inches in length, although most tend to reach up 18 inches when fully grown.
One unique trait about bearded dragons is that they display various colors on different parts of their bodies depending on the temperature of their environment. Younger beardies will typically be a bright green or yellow color with spikes down their back, whereas adults tend to be more of a dull orange or brown color with nearly black colored spikes down their back.
These reptiles also have one special adaptation which helps them survive in dry climates – they can absorb water directly through the skin. In fact, humidity levels should always remain relatively low or else it could end up being dangerous for your pet!
Bearded dragons also have interesting behavior such as head bobbing, arm waving, and even running towards people when they are excited.. If a beardie bobs its head while making eye contact with you it usually means that they see you as a friend and feel comfortable around you!
Overall these lizards make great pets due to their laid back personalities and easy care requirements. With proper husbandry practices your beardie can live up to 10 years which makes them an excellent companion for many years to come!
