Celebrate Pygmy Hippo Day

Pygmy Hippo Day is celebrated annually on April 8th. This special day was created to raise awareness of the pygmy hippopotamus, a critically endangered species in its native West African habitat.

The pygmy hippopotamus is one of the world’s most unique animals, and it is estimated that fewer than 2,000 remain in the wild. They are smaller than their larger cousins, the common hippopotamus, and have a more solitary lifestyle. The pygmy hippo has a thick hide and spends much of its time in water or mud to keep cool and protect itself from predators.

Pygmy Hippo Day is an opportunity to learn more about this fascinating animal and how we can help protect it from extinction. It’s important to remember that these animals are facing many threats, including deforestation and hunting for bushmeat. We can all do our part by supporting conservation efforts such as those undertaken by the Wild Chimpanzee Foundation (WCF). WCF works with local communities to protect pygmy hippos and other wildlife in Guinea, where they are found in the wild.

On April 8th, take some time to appreciate these incredible creatures! You can join in the celebration by sharing photos or facts about pygmy hippos on social media using #PygmyHippoDay or by donating to organizations like WCF that are working hard to save them from extinction.
