Denver Zoo: A Leader in Conservation Programs
Denver Zoo is a non-profit conservation organization dedicated to providing authentic, loving homes for the amazing animals under its care. Located in Denver’s City Park, the zoo is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization and has been serving the city since 1896. It is the most visited cultural destination in Colorado, serving 2 million people per year.
The zoo’s mission is to secure a better world for animals through human understanding. To that end, they have implemented several conservation programs designed to protect wildlife and their habitats. One of their most successful initiatives is the Species Survival Plan (SSP). This program works with zoos across the country to ensure healthy populations of threatened and endangered species by managing breeding programs and exchanging animals between zoos.
Another program at Denver Zoo is their Wildlife Protection Program (WPP). This program focuses on protecting wild populations of animals both locally and globally by engaging in research projects, developing conservation plans, and providing resources for local communities. The WPP also works with other organizations to provide education about animal welfare and conservation efforts.
The zoo also has an Animal Health Program which focuses on providing quality veterinary care for all of the animals under its care. The program provides medical treatments, nutrition counseling, behavior training, and more to keep all of their animals healthy and happy.
Finally, Denver Zoo has an Education Program which offers educational opportunities for visitors of all ages. Through interactive exhibits, classes, camps, lectures, tours, and more they strive to inspire people to become active stewards of wildlife conservation efforts around the world.
