In honor of International Cheetah Day yesterday, we thought we would share some of the magic behind Wildlife Safari’s role as one of the largest cheetah breeding facilities in the country. In addition to our team creating a safe and stress-free environment where cheetahs can breed successfully in human care under the guidance of their Species Survival Plan® (SSP), we can support them every step of the way! Our incredible carnivore keepers work with female cheetahs to train them to voluntarily participate in pregnancy ultrasounds and radiographs. Like a human pregnancy, our veterinarians track our cheetah pregnancies via ultrasound and can even detect a fetal heartbeat! During the scan, our cheetah moms get lots of snacks and positive reinforcement from their trainers for their participation. A month before the due date that is determined based on average gestation period of approximately 93 days, a set of standing radiographs are taken to get a final cub count to see how many we are expecting. Finally, the cheetah mother-to-be makes herself home in a cozy birthing hut where we can monitor the entire process through remote cameras. To date, 251 cheetah cubs have been born at Wildlife Safari!
