Speaking of World Turtle Day…Bowser is Back! 🐢
We’re excited to welcome back one of our most beloved residents—Bowser the snapping turtle—to his outdoor exhibit for the summer here at the Virginia Living Museum!
Bowser is nearly 22 years old and weighs a whopping 36.5 pounds. He originally came to the museum in 2004 after being surrendered by a private owner. Unfortunately, Bowser developed metabolic bone disease (MBD) in his early years, which affected the mobility in his hind limbs. Despite these challenges, Bowser has continued to thrive under our care.
For many years, he lived in our Cypress Swamp exhibit, but in 2019, we noticed he was having difficulty swimming. Since then, we’ve built him a custom accessible outdoor habitat where he can safely enjoy fresh air, sunshine, and essential UVB light throughout the warmer months. During the cooler seasons, Bowser moves indoors behind the scenes, but from now until early October, you’ll be able to visit him outside.
And we have more exciting news—starting next week, you can catch Bowser’s public feeding every Tuesday at 12 PM! This new addition gives guests the chance to see this gentle giant up close and learn more about snapping turtles and their care.
