Mammals are an incredibly diverse group of animals that includes over 5,000 known species. They inhabit many environments, from icy poles to deserts and deep oceans. They are unique in their features, such as mammary glands for feeding young, hair or fur, internal regulation of body temperature, highly developed brains, and specialized ear bones for hearing. They are divided into three subclasses based on reproductive traits: monotremes, marsupials, and placental mammals. Despite their adaptability, many mammal species face habitat loss, hunting, and climate change threats. As a result, conservation efforts are crucial to protecting them.
