A lack of precipitation characterizes arid or semi-arid climates. Evaporation often exceeds rainfall in these climates, making them ideal for desert or steppe vegetation. Arid climates (BW) have very little rainfall and are associated with true deserts like the Sahara in Africa and the Mojave in North America. Semi-arid climates (BS), or steppe climates, are more moderate and often found on deserts' peripheries.
