Toledo Zoo’s Ongoing Conservation Efforts

The Toledo Zoo is dedicated to conserving wildlife and habitats around the world. From butterflies in our backyard to pheasants in Nepal, the Zoo is working to create a better world for all living things.

Butterflies in Our Backyard

The Zoo is actively involved in local conservation efforts to protect the monarch butterfly, which is an iconic species of North America. In partnership with the Toledo Botanical Garden, the Zoo has planted over 1,500 milkweed plants, the only food source for monarch caterpillars. The Zoo also participates in the Monarch Watch Citizen Science program, which collects data on the monarchs’ migration patterns.

Sturgeon in Our Waters

The Zoo is also involved in efforts to protect the lake sturgeon, a species native to the Great Lakes region. The Zoo has partnered with the Ohio Department of Natural Resources to research the species and raise awareness of the threats facing the sturgeon. In addition, the Zoo works with local schools to provide educational programs about the sturgeon and its importance to the local ecosystem.

Pheasants in Nepal

The Zoo is also working to protect the endangered Himalayan monal pheasant in Nepal. The Zoo has partnered with the National Trust for Nature Conservation in Nepal to provide financial support for conservation efforts and to raise awareness of the species’ plight. The Zoo also works with local schools to provide educational programs about the pheasant and its importance to the local ecosystem.
