Our animals sometimes need to splash during the summer to stay cool. Our zookeepers will spray down our animals or provide them with pools to wallow in to help them cool off. While this helps our animals feel refreshed, it has other benefits, like skin maintenance and scent-marking.
You’ll see some of our animals rolling around in the mud. Rolling in mud keeps them from overheating when it gets too hot outside and can keep them cooler longer. That’s because the water in the mud evaporates slower than pure water. Our birds cool off by taking a bath or going swimming. Sometimes, they fluff their feathers or open their wings to catch a breeze and cool off. Besides wallowing, our elephants will suck water into their trunk and spray themselves down. Who needs a shower when you’ve got a trunk?
