The Southeast Wildlife Exposition (SEWE), held annually in Charleston, South Carolina, represents a significant platform for wildlife enthusiasts, conservationists, and the general public to come together with a shared passion for wildlife preservation. This renowned event, spanning several days, pulls visitors from all corners, providing a unique opportunity to engage with diverse wildlife exhibits and conservation discussions. For turtle lovers, the exposition offers an interactive experience, connecting them directly with initiatives aimed at turtle conservation.

At the heart of this year’s SEWE, from February 14 to 16, will be an engaging showcase at our corner booth. This booth is not only a hub for turtle enthusiasts of all ages but also a center for learning and interaction. Visitors will find a host of activities designed to both educate and entertain, transforming complex conservation concepts into enjoyable experiences. Special presentations and hands-on opportunities with turtles are highlights, allowing guests to gain a deeper understanding of the lives and habitats of these fascinating creatures.

One of the compelling draws at this year’s exposition is the chance to meet our ambassador turtles. These turtles serve as the face of our conservation efforts, handled by experienced Chelonian Keepers who ensure the well-being of these creatures while optimizing educational value. During their appearances, visitors have the opportunity to observe and learn about various turtle species—their behaviors, habitats, and the threats they face in the wild. Such interactions aim to foster a sense of responsibility and connection towards wildlife, encouraging visitors to become advocates for conservation.

Central to our SEWE participation is the ongoing turtle conservation initiative, creatively supported by the “Drink Beer. Save Turtles.®” campaign. This activist venture ingeniously combines community enjoyment with focused environmental action. The initiative comprises two pint nights where local breweries partner in raising funds for turtle conservation work. Participating on Valentine’s Day at Charleston Beer Works and the following day at LO-Fi Brewing, these events invite attendees to enjoy locally crafted beers with a philanthropic twist. For every purchase, a portion of the proceeds aids our conservation projects, turning casual drinking into a powerful tool for environmental advocacy.

A unique feature of the LO-Fi Brewing event is the inclusion of a local art market, bringing in a community of creators who support conservation efforts through their crafts. This interdisciplinary approach expands the conservation message, highlighting how various artistic domains can intertwine with environmental stewardship to create actionable change. It underscores the importance of community involvement, demonstrating that everyone—from brewers to artists—can play a role in conservation efforts.

Public engagement is a critical component of successful conservation efforts. At SEWE, interacting with the public not only spreads awareness but also cultivates a network of individuals committed to the future of turtle populations. Attendees are encouraged to follow our efforts through @drinkbeersaveturtles on social media and by visiting our News & Events page. These platforms provide updates on conservation outcomes and forthcoming events, maintaining a pulse on ongoing efforts and ensuring community members stay informed and involved.

Our participation at SEWE exemplifies a multifaceted approach to conservation education, leveraging face-to-face interactions, entertainment, and digital engagement to amplify the impact of our work. By attending, supporting through enjoyable events, or simply sharing our mission, everyone contributes to a collective effort towards preserving turtle species for future generations. Whether you partake in a beer, visit our booth, or follow our journey online, each action feeds into the larger tapestry of wildlife conservation.
