We are gathered here today to mourn the loss of Tobias, the beloved leader of our African lion family pride. We share the news of his passing at the age of seven with heavy hearts. Tobias had been battling several medical conditions, including inflammatory bowel disease and chronic kidney disease. Our dedicated Animal Care and Health teams had been tirelessly working to ensure he could live his life to the fullest while managing these diseases.

Recently, Tobias’ health turned fortuned, prompting us to bring him to our Helen and Arthur E. Johnson Animal Hospital for an examination. Our Veterinary Medicine team discovered that in addition to the progression of his chronic diseases, Tobias had developed a severe infection that had spread to his lungs and bones. Given the poor prognosis for his recovery and return to a good quality of life, our Animal Care Specialists and Veterinary Medicine team made the difficult decision to humanely euthanize Tobias to alleviate any suffering he may have been experiencing. Surrounded by those who loved and cared for him, Tobias passed peacefully. To gain a deeper understanding of his condition, our Veterinary Medicine team will conduct a postmortem examination.

Tobias, or Toby as he was affectionately called, was born on March 5, 2016, at the Buffalo Zoo. In 2018, he was recommended by the Species Survival Plan of Zoos and Aquariums to join our family pride here in Denver, supporting African lion conservation efforts. Toby quickly became a beloved pride member and adapted well to his new home alongside our female lions: Neliah, Kamara, and Sabi. Shortly after his arrival, we celebrated a significant achievement for African lion conservation with the birth of three adorable lion cubs named Tatu, Oskar, and Araali.

Of TTobias’s impact and Predator Ridge, his magnificent kingdom was immeasurable. His watchful and majestic gaze will forever be missed. We extend our deepest sympathies to all those who knew and loved him, including his devoted fans from Buffalo, who regularly kept tabs on their favorite lion.

Tobias’ passing reminds us of the fragility of life and the importance of cherishing every precious moment. He taught us valuable lessons about resilience and the strength to persevere in adversity. As an ambassador for African lion conservation, Tobias played a vital role in raising awareness about the challenges these majestic animals face in the wild.

African lions are classified as vulnerable by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), with their population steadily declining due to habitat loss, human-wildlife conflict, and illegal hunting. Tobias’ presence reminded us of the urgent need for continued efforts to protect and conserve these incredible creatures and their habitats.

While we grieve the loss of Tobias, let us also honor his memory by supporting organizations and initiatives that work tirelessly to safeguard the future of African lions. By getting involved in local conservation projects and supporting policies that protect even spreadinreness through our social networks, we can all contribute to ensuring a brighter future for these magnificent animals.

Tobias may no longer be physically with us, but his spirit will forever live on in the hearts and minds of those fortunate to have known him. In his honor, let us continue to work together to protect and preserve the incredible diversity of wildlife that graces our planet. Tobias, thank you for the joy, inspiration, and love you brought to our lives. Rest in peace, dear friend.

Source Description
We are deeply saddened to share that Tobias, beloved leader of our African lion family pride, was humanely euthanized October 11, 2023, at the age of several medical conditions, including inflammatory bowel disease with difficulty digesting certain proteins and chronic kidney disease. He has been under treatment and close monitoring by our Animal Care and Health teams to ensure he continues to continue the best quality of life possible while managing his diseases.

After a notable decline in his health earlier this week, Tobias was brought to our Helen and Arthur E. Johnson Animal Hospital for an exam. Our Veterinary Medicine team found that in addition to the progression of his chronic diseases, he developed a severe infection that spread to his lungs and bones, which made his prognosis for recovery and return to a good quality of life poor. Given the prognosis, our Animal Care Specialists and Veterinary Medicine team euthanized Tobias to relieve any suffering. Tobias passed peacefully, surrounded by those who loved and cared for him. Our Veterinary Medicine team will conduct a postmortem exam to better understand the full breadth of his condition.
