The HOA Savanna is BACK, and It’s official–the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium’s Heart of Africa region is open for the season! This highly anticipated event marks the beginning of a thrilling journey into the heart of the African wilderness, right in the heart of Ohio. Step into a world of wonder and discover the unique and fascinating aspects of the HOA Savanna.

Reintroducing animals to the savanna is a carefully planned and executed operation. The Heart of Africa team begins by fencing off a small portion of the savanna to accommodate the smaller gazelle species. This includes Thomson’s gazelles, slender-horned gazelles, and dama gazelles. Initially focusing on the smaller species, the team ensures they don’t overexert themselves during the transition from the winter barns to their new habitat.

Once the smaller gazelles are comfortably settled into the savanna, it’s time for the majestic giraffes to enter. These gentle giants are introduced into the yard and allowed to explore their new surroundings. With their long necks gracefully stretching towards the sky and their distinctively patterned coats blending seamlessly with the landscape, the presence of giraffes in the savanna creates a genuinely mesmerizing spectacle.

After the giraffes have had the chance to “settle in,” it’s time for the wildebeest, ostriches, kudus, and zebras to join the savanna community. These diverse species, each with unique characteristics and adaptations, add a vibrant touch to the breathtaking landscape. From the elegant strides of the wildebeest and the swift movements of the ostriches to the majestic antlers of the kudus and the striking patterns of the zebras, each animal contributes to the rich tapestry of wildlife in the HOA Savanna.

While observing the animals in their natural habitat is an incredible experience, the Heart of Africa region offers even more exciting opportunities for visitors. The Heart of Africa shuttle, operating on weekends from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., provides a convenient and immersive way to explore the vast savanna. Hop aboard the shuttle and embark on an adventure like no other as you witness the beauty of the animals up close and marvel at their natural behaviors.

As if that wasn’t thrilling enough, starting on April 10, daily Giraffe Feedings will be offered. Have you ever dreamed of feeding a giraffe? Well, now you have the chance to make that dream a reality! Interact with these awe-inspiring creatures and experience the joy of offering them a tasty treat. The Columbus Zoo and Aquarium’s Heart of Africa region is open for the season! Each year, the Heart of Africa team gradually introduces animals from their large winter barns to the savanna. The team begins with fencing off a small portion of the savanna for the smaller gazelle species (Thomson’s gazelles, slender-horned gazelles and dama gazelles). Gradually working up to the larger savanna allows them to ensure the gazelles don’t overexert themselves.

Once the smaller species are settled in the savanna, the Heart of Africa team introduces the giraffe herd into the yard. After the giraffes explore the savanna and “settle in,” it’s the wildebeest, ostrich, kudu and zebras’ turn! Each species’ introduction to the Heart of Africa savanna is carefully orchestrated to ensure a safe experience for all the animals.

The Heart of Africa shuttle also operates on weekends from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. starting on April 10; Giraffe Feedings will be offered daily. Who’s excited?!
