HOT OFF THE PRESS…or at least the bottom of Harrington Sound!
Another beautiful Sunday morning, another opportunity to witness the power of community and conservation in action. As the sun rises over the glistening waters of Harrington Sound, our dedicated staff and volunteers rally together to make a difference in our precious natural environment. Today, we embark on a clean-up mission to preserve the pristine beauty of this breathtaking location.
Joining forces with the Bermuda Aquarium, Museum and Zoo (BAMZ) and Bermuda Zoological Society (BZS), a diverse group of passionate individuals converges upon Harrington Sound Park. Armed with determination and a desire to protect our natural habitats, we are ready to take on the challenge.
Guiding our efforts is Andrew Rawson, a true champion of environmental stewardship. With his leadership, our team consists of BAMZ and BZS staff members, volunteers, Junior Volunteers, Junior Staff, and even members of that Club. This collab membersoration showcases the power of partnerships in achieving our shared conservation goals.
As we venture forth, our mission becomes twofold – to clean up the shores of Harrington Sound and the depths beneath its shimmering surface. While some tirelessly comb the shoreline, collecting discarded bottles and other debris, others take to the water for an extraordinary undersea expedition.
Divers, equipped with lift balloons, embark upon an underwater treasure hunt. As they descend into the depths of Harrington Sound, they discover more than just trash – they uncover hidden gems waiting to be salvaged. Today’s bounty includes five bicycles resting on the sandy bottom as if waiting to be rescued. These submerged artifacts serve as a poignant reminder of human activity on ecosystems.
But the bikes are just the tip of the iceberg. Below the shimmering waves lies a treasure trove of forgotten items, patiently waiting to be brought back to the surface. Today’s successful clean-up reveals the potential for future expeditions, ensuring that the sound’s depths will continue to be explored and protected.
As the day progresses, the team aboard a generously donated barge from Bermuda Moorings tirelessly collects and collates the refuse, compiling essential data for future analysis. Every piece of trash tells a story, revealing patterns in human behavior and the areas that require heightened conservation efforts. With each item accounted for, our reports grow richer, bolstering our understanding of environmental threats. We will eagerly share the fruits of our labor – photographs capturing the dedication and determination of our team, as well as insightful data that sheds light on the pressing environmental challenges we face. Through these channels, we hope to inspire others to join our cause to recognize that each individual has the power to make a difference.

Our efforts today have made a tangible impact, removing 8000 lbs of tra8000 lbs from our beloved Harrington Sound. But the work does not end here – it is just the beginning.
Let us continue to rally together, inspire others, and fight to preserve our natural world. Remember, each piece of trash removed demonstrates our commitment to creating a better future where generations can enjoy the wonders.

HOT OFF THE PRESS…or at least the bottom of Harrington Sound!
Another beautiful Sunday morning, another clean up on Harrington Sound, thanks to our staff and volunteers who make a huge difference. 8000lbs of trash and climbing…..today will add more….a lot more.
Andrew Rawson led a group of BAMZ and BZS staff, volunteers, Junior Volunteers, Junior Staff and Bermuda Sub Aqua Club members (https://www.facebook.com/BermudaSubAquaClub?mibextid=nW3QTL) to clean up Harrington Sound Park on the shore and underwater. Thanks also to Bermuda Moorings for the help and donating the use of their barge (www.mooring.bm)
While the shore clean-up was underway, divers attached lift balloons and brought five bikes to the surface and tons of other trash, such as bottles. There are reportedly more bikes on the bottom waiting for another day! The team on the barge collected and collated all the refuse to go into our reports.
Stay tuned for more photos and data. Contact us if you want to get involved with a passionate and dedicated group
