Interesting Facts About Ring-Tailed Lemurs
Ring-tailed lemurs are one of the most recognizable species of lemurs, and they stand out for their raccoon-like markings—black-rimmed eyes and a tail with 13-14 alternating black and white bands. They are highly social animals, living in groups of up to 30 individuals, and are also female-dominant species. To keep warm during cold days, ring-tailed lemurs often spend hours soaking up the warmth of the sun.
These fascinating primates can be found in southern and southwestern Madagascar, where they inhabit forests, woodlands, scrublands, and rocky areas. Five new primates were recently born at Fota Wildlife Park in Cork County, Ireland – three endangered baby lemurs and two baby monkeys!
Ring-tailed lemurs have become popular zoo residents due to their intelligence and playful behavior. They are also the most intensely studied of all the lemurs.
