International Beaver Day

International Beaver Day is celebrated annually on April 7th. This holiday was created in 2009 by Beavers Wetlands & Wildlife (B.W.W.), a non-profit organization dedicated to conserving beavers and their habitats. It’s a day to celebrate and raise awareness of the plight of this amazing rodent, who has been an integral part of many cultures for centuries.

Beavers are large, semi-aquatic rodents that are primarily nocturnal. They have orange teeth and webbed feet, which help them swim and build dams in rivers and streams. Beavers are known for their diligence; they can construct dams up to 6 feet high and 300 feet long! These dams create wetlands that provide habitat for other species, such as fish, amphibians, birds, and mammals.

International Beaver Day is a great opportunity to learn more about these incredible creatures and their importance to our environment. There are lots of fun facts about beavers that you can share with your friends or family on this day! For example, did you know that beaver fur is waterproof? Or that they have special valves in their nose and ears so they can stay underwater for up to 15 minutes?

Beavers also play an important role in climate change mitigation as their wetlands store atmospheric carbon dioxide. As we work towards creating a more sustainable future, it’s important to recognize the contributions of these animals and protect their habitats from destruction or pollution.

So take some time on April 7th to celebrate International Beaver Day! Learn more about these fascinating creatures, share fun facts with your friends or family, or even visit a nearby wetland if you’re able!
