Play along with our March Madness Bracket!
Who rules the animal kingdom? That’s up to you to decide! This month play along as we determine which animal has what it takes to win it all! Stop by our Guest Services building all month long between 10am – 2pm to fill out your bracket and be entered for a chance to win a Henry Vilas Zoo swag bag with a stuffed animal and a train/carousel punch card. Brackets must be turned in by March 31st at noon. No purchase necessary to win. Odds of winning depend on the number of entries. Entries may not be submitted electronically.
First up, we’re starting with the AQUATIC division. Two heavy hitters are going head to head:
American alligators can grow up to 15 feet long and can swim up to 20 miles per hour in short bursts, which is about as fast as a bottlenose dolphin! They can hold their breath for up to an hour, which helps them hunt underwater. Their strong jaw muscles can exert up to 300 pounds of pressure per square inch. However, these reptiles are ambush predators, which means they prefer to stay motionless in the water and let their prey come to them.
Harbor seals have unique oxygen-conserving adaptations that allow them to dive up to depths of 1640 feet! Seals are also incredibly agile in the water. They have excellent eyesight underwater, but their highly sensitive whiskers are so good at detecting prey in murky water, they don’t even need to use their eyes! Harbor seals don’t have strong molars for crushing hard shells because their diet mainly consists of fish and squid.
