Today marks a global celebration of Earth Day, and it coincides with the start of our 5th Annual Turtle Month. From now until World Turtle Day® on May 23, we invite you to join our mission to protect the planet’s most endangered turtles and tortoises. This month-long observance is crucial for raising awareness and fostering global action to ensure the survival of these species.

Our collective efforts have already had a substantial impact. From rescuing tens of thousands of turtles from illegal trade to restoring their habitats and empowering global communities, we’ve seen incredible progress. Yet, the work is far from over.

With over 180 of the world’s 360 turtle species facing the threat of extinction, immediate action is essential. Our strategic initiatives aim to bolster these efforts, including scaling up our AZA-accredited Turtle Survival Center. This facility plays a pivotal role in maintaining secure and genetically diverse assurance colonies, vital for future reintroduction programs. Expanding in-situ conservation in critical areas such as Central and South America, Southeast Asia, and Africa is another key component, allowing us to tackle threats on the ground where they occur.

This Earth Day, as we kick off Turtle Month, we have a range of activities planned to engage communities worldwide. We encourage participation in our Drink Beer. Save Turtles.® fundraisers and free virtual webinars available to anyone, anywhere. These events are designed to educate and inspire action, highlighting the critical role each individual can play in conservation.

The threats faced by turtles are numerous and severe. Habitat destruction, illegal wildlife trade, climate change, and pollution are just a few factors contributing to declining turtle populations. Turtles are often caught in fishing nets or poached for their shells and meat. Coastal developments and urbanization have led to significant loss of nesting beaches, while climate change alters sex ratios and threatens marine habitats.

To combat these challenges, local and international collaboration is vital. The Turtle Survival Center serves as a beacon of hope. By maintaining assurance colonies, we can safeguard species from extinction while supporting future reintroduction into native habitats. Our initiatives extend beyond captive breeding. On the ground, in-situ conservation efforts focus on habitat restoration, community engagement, and sustainable practices to reduce human-wildlife conflict.

Education and advocacy are key components of our strategy. By raising awareness through Turtle Month events, we aim to inspire global audiences to take action. Our virtual webinars offer insights into the science of turtle conservation, ethical considerations, and practical ways to contribute to these efforts from afar. The Drink Beer. Save Turtles.® fundraisers provide a social yet impactful avenue for individuals to support our mission while enjoying community camaraderie.

Individual actions matter greatly. Simple changes in daily life can significantly affect turtle conservation. Reducing plastic use, supporting eco-friendly products, and advocating for policies that protect wildlife are steps everyone can take. Engaging with local conservation groups and participating in citizen science projects can also provide valuable support to ongoing research and conservation efforts.

The plight of turtles serves as a stark reminder of humanity’s broader impact on biodiversity. Protecting turtles is not just about preserving a single species; it’s about maintaining ecological balance. Turtles play critical roles in their ecosystems, from controlling jellyfish populations to dispersing seeds and maintaining healthy seagrass beds. Their survival is intertwined with the health of our planet.

By celebrating Earth Day and Turtle Month, we’re not only raising awareness but actively participating in a movement toward a brighter future for these remarkable creatures. Our collective responsibility is clear: to be stewards of the Earth, ensuring a sustainable world for turtles and all wildlife.

Join us as we embark on this crucial mission. Together, we can create lasting impacts that resonate across generations, fostering a world where turtles thrive. This Earth Day, let’s commit to actions that reflect our dedication to preserving the rich biodiversity of our planet. Whether through participation in events, advocating for policies, or changing personal lifestyles, every action counts in this global effort to protect turtles and their natural habitats.
