Kenny the Seal is a beloved and iconic resident of Chicago’s Shedd Aquarium. Kenny has been living at the aquarium since 1940, when he was rescued as an orphaned baby seal pup. During his time at Shedd, Kenny has become an ambassador for marine conservation, an avid fisher and a much-loved member of the staff.

Kenny’s most famous moment came when he swam with celebrated diver Jacques Cousteau during one of Cousteau’s expeditions to the Great Lakes in 1962. This made national news, and helped raise awareness of aquatic wildlife in the area. The footage that captured this special moment was even included in Cousteau’s 1969 documentary “The Undersea World of Jacques Cousteau.”

Today, Kenny enjoys his retirement at Shedd Aquarium surrounded by friends and family. He can usually be found lounging on a bed of blankets or taking refreshing dips in his pool. Kenny loves playing with toys and interacting with visitors who come by to check out his new home!

Anyone looking for an educational experience combined with breathtaking views should take a trip to see Kenny the Seal at Shedd Aquarium. Visitors can learn more about this amazing animal from guides provided by the aquarium staff and watch as he plays in his peaceful habitat.
