Overview
The Pittsburgh Zoo & Aquarium is a combined zoo and aquarium located in the United States, and is one of only six major zoo-aquarium hybrids in the country. It is situated in Highland Park, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and spans 77 acres (31 ha) of parkland. The facility houses over 4,000 animals representing 475 species, including 20 species classified as threatened or endangered. It serves as both an educational resource and a conservation institution.
Originally opened in 1898 as the Highland Park Zoo, it has transitioned from a simple menagerie into a modern conservation-focused facility. Significant growth occurred in the late 1930s through efforts by the Works Progress Administration and private foundation support, including the addition of the second-largest aquarium in the country. From 2002 to 2022, the Pittsburgh Zoo and PPG Aquarium was named under a naming rights agreement with PPG Industries. The zoo lost its accreditation from the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) in 2015 but successfully regained it in 2024.
