Love Hornbill Day 2023
February 13, 2023 was Love Hornbill Day at the Phoenix Zoo. Visitors were able to meet some of the hornbills that call the zoo home, including 11-year-old Diego and five-year-old Minnie, a newly introduced breeding pair. 24-year-old Sylvester’s new mate 21-year-old Barbara Grace had recently arrived from Santa Barbara and was in quarantine. After the two to three week introduction period, they would be on display at Tropical Flights.
The Phoenix Zoo was also sad to see some hornbills leaving, including one-and-a-half-year-old wrinkled hornbill Tubac who was moving to Moody Gardens and rhinoceros hornbills Nash and Phoenix who were leaving on breeding recommendations.
The zoo was proud to announce that their project, “Flying Gardeners,” had received funding from the Disney Conservation Fund. Senior bird keeper Marisa Boyd had worked with local organizations over Zoom to help draft the grant in 2022. The project focuses on protecting 10 hornbill and two flying fox species within the Kenyir watershed in Terengganu. Marisa was excited to return to Malaysia in 2023 to resume her work and collaborate with new partners.
