Meerkats are one of the most beloved animals at the San Diego Zoo. These small mammals live in large groups called mobs, and can be seen sunbathing, wrestling, and chasing each other around their enclosures. Meerkats are also known for their intelligence and curiosity; they have been observed using tools to dig for food and even taking turns standing guard while others sleep.
The San Diego Zoo is home to several meerkat families, which can be seen at the Safari Base Camp exhibit. Visitors can observe these fascinating creatures as they go about their daily activities, such as eating cat chow, fruit, and meal worms; digging up to 260 holes a day; and snuggling up together for a nap.
Meerkats are also well-known for their roles in popular culture. One of the San Diego Zoo’s meerkats was the animator’s model for Timon in Disney’s The Lion King movie. Additionally, meerkats have been featured in Animal Planet documentaries and on social media posts from the San Diego Zoo itself.
