Say hello to a familiar face at the North Carolina Zoo, Chris! Chris is an Animal Management Supervisor and has been here for nearly 40 years! The Zoo is important to him because it illustrates that no matter our jobs, we ALL have an essential role in conservation, education, and research.
He loves the Zoo and the unique opportunities it has provided. Still, he cherishes helping others, “I like to play a role in helping the younger staff, and I want to make sure they receive the same experiences that I have working here.”
Chris shares why he agreed to be featured for Black History Month, “I agreed to do this not just for Black History Month but to highlight our diversity, to show that a minority like me can achieve with hard work and commitment. Being a local to this area, I hope I can assist and provide other minorities with insight into how they, too, can get connected to the Zoo and demonstrate to all ethnicities that there are opportunities here and waiting for you.”
He is proud of the work that is being done at the Zoo. “With the creation of the DEAI Committee, I have seen more outreach to underserved communities than we’ve ever done before. As a committee representative, I hope I am a positive influence.”
Each February, Chris enjoys learning something new about Black History Month from sharing historical documents. He connects the Zoo by looking into the future, “My hope is with the outreach programs we’ve developed, we’re showing and demonstrating our doors are open to you, and we welcome you to apply and become a member of our Zoo Family.”
