First and foremost, let’s talk about what it means to be a mammal seasonal animal care specialist. At the ASLC, our team consists of full-time animal care staff and seasonal and intern members who dedicate their time to the well-being of our incredible animals. As a mammal specialist, I work with various fascinating mammals, including sea otters, seals, and sea lions.
One of the things I love about my job is that no two days are ever the same. Each day presents new challenges and opportunities to interact with these incredible creatures. From providing daily care and enrichment to assisting with medical procedures, our team’s goal is to ensure the well-being and happiness of every animal under our care.
One unique aspect of my job is getting to know each animal’s personality. Yes, you heard it right! Just like humans, animals have their distinct personalities and preferences. For example, we have sea lions who love to show off their acrobatic skills, seals who enjoy playing hide-and-seek, and otters who are constantly curious and mischievous. Developing a bond with each animal, understanding their needs, and finding ways to keep them mentally and physically stimulated is both a challenge and a joy.
Working in animal care can be incredibly rewarding but comes with its fair share of challenges. One of our biggest challenges is ensuring that our animals remain healthy and free from physical or psychological stress. This involves regular health check-ups, monitoring their diets, and creating engaging environments that mimic their natural habitats as closely as possible.
As a seasonal mammal animal care specialist, I’ve had some remarkable experiences. I will never forget the first time I witnessed a sea otter pup take its first swim or when a sea lion I had been working with for months finally learned a new behavior. These moments of accomplishment and connection with the animals make all the hard work and dedication worthwhile.
Another memorable experience was when a rescued sea lion suffered from a severe injury and was successfully rehabilitated and released back into the wild. Being part of the process that gives these fantastic creatures a second chance at life is magical.
Teamwork and collaboration are vital in our line of work. We rely on each other’s expertise and support to ensure the best care possible for our animals. Every team member plays a crucial role, from veterinarians and nutritionists to trainers and volunteers.

This year we have four seasonal animal care staff specialists and 12 animal care interns. In the summer, our seasonal staff and interns are crucial team members, and we thank you for all you do! ❤️
