Have you ever heard of a harbor seal named Monty? If not, get ready to meet this incredible creature who has overcome tremendous obstacles to find a new home at the Virginia Aquarium. Monty’s debut at the aquarium is an exciting event highlighting the challenges and triumphs of wildlife conservation.
At just a year and a half old, Monty has already experienced more than most animals his age. Rescued, rehabilitated, and released twice in 2020 by the National Marine Life Center (NMLC), Monty faced various interactions with humans and dogs that required intervention. Despite the NMLC’s best efforts, Monty was later found entangled in fishing gear and had to be rescued again. At this point, the decision was made that Monty would be unable to thrive on his own and would need a permanent home.
In June 2021, Monty arrived at the Virginia Aquarium, where he was gradually introduced to his new habitat. Over the past few weeks, he has been allowed to explore and become acquainted with the harbor seal exhibit, ensuring he feels comfortable in his new environment. The aquarium staff has been delighted to see Monty acclimating well and is thrilled to announce that he is now officially on exhibit.
What sets Monty’s exhibit apart is the freedom he is given to choose where he wants to spend his time. While the door to the off-exhibit area remains open, Monty can decide for himself whether he prefers to relax in a quieter space or interact with visitors. This freedom allows Monty to find a sense of security while allowing the public to observe him in a way that respects his needs.
Monty’s journey serves as a reminder of the crucial role of wildlife conservation. His story highlights human activities’ impact on marine life and the immense effort required to rehabilitate and care for animals in need. The Virginia Aquarium ensures his well-being by providing Monty with a safe and enriching environment. It raises awareness about protecting our oceans and the creatures that call them home.
Visitors to the aquarium can look forward to seeing Monty in person and learning more about harbor seals. These fascinating creatures are native to the coastal waters of the Northern Hemisphere and have adapted to life both on land and in the sea. Harbor seals are known for their playful nature and unique vocalizations, ranging from barks to growls and even howls.
Observing Monty and other harbor seals at the aquarium offers a rare opportunity to witness these animals up close and gain a deeper understanding of their behavior and conservation needs. The exhibit provides educational information about harbor seals, their natural habitat, and the challenges they face in the wild. By engaging with visitors, the aquarium aims to inspire a sense of wonder and appreciation for these incredible creatures and encourage action to protect their fragile ecosystems.
Monty’s debut at the Virginia Aquarium is an event worth celebrating. It represents the resilience of animals and the dedication of organizations like the NMLC and the aquarium staff, who work tirelessly to ensure their welfare. Monty’s journey is a powerful reminder that everyone has a role in wildlife conservation. By visiting the aquarium and learning about the remarkable stories of creatures like Monty, we can all be inspired to make a difference and safeguard the beauty of our natural world for future generations to enjoy.
So mark your calendars and plan to visit the Virginia Aquarium to witness Monty’s debut and learn more about harbor seals. It’s a chance to witness the resilience of nature firsthand and be inspired to take action to preserve our precious wildlife and their habitats. At only a year and a half old, Monty the harbor seal has been through quite a lot in his young life. After interacting with humans and dogs, he was rescued, rehabilitated, and released twice in 2020 by our friends at the National Marine Life Center (NMLC) in Buzzards Bay, MA. Following his second release, he was later found entangled in fishing gear, rescued a third time, and thus deemed non-releasable since he would not thrive on his own and had habituated to being around humans. He arrived at the Virginia Aquarium in June 2021 and is now beginning the next phase of his life as a resident with us!
