Monotremes are a unique group of mammals found only in Australia and New Guinea. They lay eggs and have a cloaca, a single opening for excretion, urination, and reproduction. They lack teeth as adults and instead have horny plates in their mouths to grind food. The platypus and echidnas are the most well-known monotremes. Despite their unusual characteristics, they play important ecological roles and are protected by conservation efforts.
