Our staff have been working tirelessly on an exciting undertaking behind the scenes, and we are delighted to introduce you to two very special members of the Blank Park Zoo family – Topper and Rafe, the kookaburra chicks! Born in June to Ma and Pop, these adorable little birds have captured the hearts of everyone at the Zoo. This article will take you through their upbringing, from hatching to becoming ambassadors for their species.
Blank Park Zoo has closely coordinated with the Kookaburra Species Survival Plan (SSP) coordinator to incorporate kookaburra into our ambassador program. Ma and Pop, the experienced parents, have successfully reared many clutches, and their offspring can already be seen in the Australia walk-through exhibit here at the Zoo. However, it was determined that Topper and Rafe, the most recent clutch, would be perfect candidates for joining our ambassador team.
To ensure the chicks’ well-being, they were initially cared for by Ma and Pop. After several weeks, they were moved into a brooder in the avian team’s incubation room, beginning their hand-rearing journey with our dedicated staff. Hand rearing is crucial to establishing trust between the chicks and their keepers. The incubation staff was responsible for hand-feeding the chicks five times a day during the first month and three times a day for the next month.
Once the chicks had developed their feathers, they were ready for the next stage of their ambassador training. They embarked on a triumphant journey to our ambassador building, where our skilled keepers continued to hand-feed them and encourage them to start eating independently. This process allows the chicks to develop essential skills and fosters a bond of trust and affection between them and their caretakers.
Now, you might be wondering what lies ahead for Topper and Rafe. We are thrilled to share that their exciting journey continues, and we invite you to stay connected with us through our Facebook page. There, you will find captivating updates and heartwarming stories about their progress. Our ambassador keeper, Kaylee, will document and share precious moments of these kookaburra chicks as they grow and learn.

At Blank Park Zoo, we believe every creature has a unique story, no matter how small or seemingly ordinary. By introducing Topper and Rafe into our ambassador program, we hope to showcase the fascinating characteristics of kookaburras and educate visitors about their vital role in ecosystems. These cheeky little birds are symbolic of Australia and instrumental in controlling populations of insects and small vertebrates, preserving the delicate balance of their natural habitats.

Meet Topper and Rafe the kookaburras! Topper and Rafe are kookaburra chicks hatched at Blank Park Zoo in June to Ma and Pop. Blank Park Zoo has been discussing with the Kookaburra SSP coordinator to introduce Kookaburras to our ambassador program. Ma and Pop are experienced parents and have reared many clutches, and we’re lucky to house three of their kiddos already in the Australia walk-through here at the Zoo. It was determined that the recent clutch, Topper and Rafe, were ideal candidates for joining our ambassador team.
The chicks were reared by Ma and Pop and moved into a brooder in the avian team’s incubation room after several weeks to begin being hand-reared by our staff. Hand-rearing the chicks is a vital step to building trust, and our incubation staff hand-fed the chicks five times a day for the first month and three times a day for the next month. After developing their feathers, the chicks made the triumphant trip to our ambassador building, where our ambassador keepers continued to hand feed and encourage the chicks to begin eating on their own.
