Earlier this year, before our Asian small-clawed otter pups were born, Animal Care Specialist Anton M. treated Bu, Pintar, and Jai to “immersive experience” enrichment. To create this engaging experience, the pool in our otter’s El Pomar Foundation Village Hall habitat was kept dry for a few days to stimulate drought-like conditions before a rainstorm occurred. This storm had dimmed lights, thunderstorm sounds, misters, and even live earthworms. Then, the waterfall in their habitat was turned on to simulate a flash flood which resulted in a total pool, marking the return of water and fish. Anton shared a bit more about this immersive experience and the importance of ensuring our animals are physically and mentally stimulated: “One of my favorite things that was brought up during a [Professional Development Program hosted by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums] last year was “immersive experience” enrichment. Often, enrichment is associated with toys or playing, but you can create specific scenarios or stories of natural events to elicit specific natural behaviors for animals in human care. My favorite of these is a simulated rainstorm. Denver Zoo’s otter habitat makes it easy and fun to change the environment and elicit various natural behaviors.”
