The field research conducted by Team Terrapin involves various methods aimed at understanding and safeguarding the terrapins. Every day from April to September, teams of two to three volunteers comb the beach, meticulously searching for adult and hatchling turtle crawls and nests. In 2022, over 70% of the identified nests fell victim to predators such as raccoons, armadillos, crows, fire ants, and ghost crabs. I am taking a moment to recognize the remarkable individuals of Team Terrapin who protect these tiny treasures on the Florida coastline–the Carolina Diamondback Terrapin (Malaclemys terrapin centrata).
Team Terrapin is made up of 30+ volunteers and led by Tabitha Hootman of Turtle Survival Alliance-NAFTRG’s North Florida Program (NAFTRG stands for North American Freshwater Turtle Research Group). They work to conserve this species using terrapin crawl locating and tracking, nest detection, data retrieval, and terrapin natural history.
This field research requires working in teams of two to three, canvasing the beach daily from the beginning of April through the end of September, looking for adult and hatchling turtle crawls and nests and recording data.
Last year, Team Terrapin cataloged 34 live adult females and identified 888 separate nests, greatly exceeding previous years’ records, and are still producing great results in 2023.
Predation is one of the biggest threats to this species; over 70% of the identified nests in 2022 were preyed upon by raccoons, armadillos, and, to a lesser extent, crows, fire ants, and ghost crabs. But with sustained and intensified monitoring and predator deterrence during the incubation and hatching stage, Team Terrapin hopes to increase the number of young terrapins that survive the gauntlet to adulthood.
