Hippos and Fish: A Symbiotic Relationship

Have you ever wondered how hippos keep their skin so clean? It turns out that they have a very special relationship with fish.

Hippos are large, semi-aquatic mammals that spend most of their time in the water. But their skin can get dirty from mud and other debris even when submerged. Unable to pick up a stick and scratch their backs, they’ve partnered with a fish called the barbell. Barbells nibble away all the dirt and parasites on the hippo‘s skin, keeping them clean and healthy.

This symbiotic relationship is beneficial for both species. The barbells get an easy meal, while the hippos get a free spa treatment! This mutualistic relationship has been observed in many parts of Africa, where these two species often inhabit the same areas.

We accept, motivate, teach…and help change lives! At Hippos & Fish Pediatric Therapy Services, we strive to reach the highest possible level of care for our patients. Our skilled clinicians provide specialized pediatric therapy services with compassion and understanding.
