Princess Hailey, the loggerhead sea turtle, has captured the hearts of staff and volunteers at the Sea Turtle Healing Center. After a remarkable rehabilitation journey, she is ready to return to her natural habitat – the vast ocean. On Monday, October 2, at 10 a.m., we will release Princess Hailey at James Nance Park in Indialantic. This joyous event is open to the public, rain or shine.

The story of Princess Hailey’s rescue is both remarkable and heartbreaking. Boaters found her floating and lethargic on July 1. As they brought her onboard, a large amount of water flowed from her mouth, signaling something was wrong. Despite showing no external signs of illness, a CT scan revealed that Princess Hailey had pneumonia, a potentially life-threatening condition for sea turtles.

Further examination revealed bruising around her neck and front flippers. It was suspected that she had been entangled in a fishing line, which made it difficult for her to lift her head and breathe properly. The water she inhaled and the subsequent pneumonia were unfortunate consequences of this entanglement. The Sea Turtle Healing Center’s coordinator, Jess Patterson, expressed their concerns about the impact of human activities on these incredible creatures.

To treat Princess Hailey’s pneumonia, the Healing Center utilized a nebulizer that administers medication as a mist for inhalation. Princess Hailey received antibiotics through the nebulizer daily for about a month. This innovative treatment proved highly effective in clearing the pneumonia and alleviating her symptoms. Princess Hailey’s successful rehabilitation highlighted the importance of technological advancements in turtle care, such as the CT scan utilized during her diagnostic process.

Princess Hailey’s resilience and will to survive were truly remarkable. At the Healing Center, she became famous for her well-behaved and cooperative demeanor. The staff and volunteers grew fond of her curious yet shy personality. One of the standout moments was her behavior during the nebulization treatment. Princess understood that this treatment aided her recovery and willingly participated. This level of understanding and cooperation is quite exceptional in sea turtles. Princess Hailey’s journey has brought hope and inspiration and deepened our understanding of these magnificent creatures.
