San Diego Zoo’s Tree Kangaroo

*****

Tree kangaroos are an amazing species of marsupials that live in the tropical rainforests of New Guinea and far north Queensland, Australia. They have adapted to life in the trees, and are able to climb with ease due to their long, sharp claws on both front and hind feet. Tree kangaroos can weigh up to 17 kilograms, making them the largest arboreal animals in both Australia and New Guinea. They primarily feed on tree leaves but will also eat buds, flowers, and fruit. Tree kangaroos are unique macropods who have adapted to a life in trees; however, loss of habitat and uncontrolled hunting have forced many species close to extinction.
