Sightings Alert: Meet Ruby and Rose!

Zoo Atlanta has welcomed two new red panda sisters, Ruby and Rose, who have been exploring their new habitat in the Asian Forest since they arrived from Zoo Knoxville in February. Red pandas are listed as endangered by the IUCN due to habitat loss, poaching, and the illegal pet trade. Through its Mabel Dorn Reeder Conservation Endowment Fund, Zoo Atlanta supports the Red Panda Network’s reforestation nursery in Jaubari, Nepal. The red panda enclosure has undergone extensive upgrades, including natural perching allowing the largely arboreal animals to traverse the area without touching the ground. A temperature-regulated building gives them the choice of open-air or enclosed spaces.

Get ready for a wild ride as we delve into the captivating world of red pandas at Zoo Atlanta! These adorable critters, distant relatives of the raccoon, have been stealing hearts left and right. But there’s more to these furry friends than meets the eye.

Picture this: you’re strolling through the lush, green Asian Forest, and suddenly, you spot a flash of rust-colored fur. That’s right – you’ve just seen one of the most enchanting creatures you’ll ever meet. Red pandas, or Ailurus fulgens, are a delightful mix of cute and curious.

These little rascals love to play high up in the trees, using their bushy tails for balance as they leap from branch to branch. It’s an acrobatic feat worth seeing, and Zoo Atlanta is the perfect spot to witness their high-wire acts. They even have a unique adaptation in their wrists called a “false thumb” that helps them grip onto those slippery branches.

At Zoo Atlanta, red pandas are pampered with a diet of bamboo, fruit, and the occasional sweet treat. They have quite the sweet tooth, you know! Yet, these treats are more than just tasty tidbits – they’re also packed with nutrients essential for keeping our furry friends happy and healthy.

But life isn’t always a walk in the park for these charismatic creatures. Unfortunately, red pandas face various threats in the wild, including habitat loss, poaching, and climate change. That’s where Zoo Atlanta’s commitment to conservation comes in – the zoo actively supports red panda protection initiatives and participates in the Species Survival Plan.

Visitors to Zoo Atlanta can not only marvel at these bewitching animals but also learn about their fascinating lives and challenges. And who knows – you might even get lucky enough to witness one of their playful wrestling matches or catch a glimpse of them snoozing adorably on a tree branch.

So, next time you find yourself in Atlanta, make sure to swing by the zoo and pay a visit to these irresistibly charming red pandas. Trust me – one look into their expressive eyes, and you’ll be captivated by the spell they weave.

Ultimately, isn’t it incredible how these tiny, enchanting beings can leave such an indelible mark on our hearts?
