Celebrating the Zoo’s 100th Year with Free Flight Encounters

As we enter the Zoo’s 100th year, we’re looking back at the evolution of our free flight encounters.

A Brief History of Free Flight Encounters

The free flight encounters at the Zoo started with just a few advocacy manu (birds). This was then expanded to include a variety of species, including donated pets, rescued and rehabilitated wildlife, and more.

These encounters occur every day of the week at 11.45 am and are a great way to learn more about these animals and their behaviors.

The Benefits of Free Flight Encounters

The free flight encounters are a great way to learn more about the animals, their specific behaviors, and how to support their wild cousins best.

These encounters also provide a unique opportunity to observe the animals in their natural environment. This helps to understand better the animals, their behaviors, and how to best care for them.

How You Can Help

In addition to the free flight encounters, there are other ways you can help support the Zoo’s wildlife. This includes purchasing forest-friendly paper and wood products and supporting conservation efforts.

You can also watch the videos in the Zoo’s 100th playlist to learn more about the evolution of the free flight encounters and the animals they feature.

We’re flying high in our 99th (and soon-to-be 100th) year!

In this latest episode celebrating the Zoo’s centenary, our animal experience team leader Lizzy discusses the role and evolution of our incredible free flight encounters.

Originally starting with just a few advocacy manu (birds), these immersive and interactive flight displays have grown to include diverse species. These include previous pets that were donated to the Zoo and rescued and rehabilitated wildlife that, because of their disabilities, were unable to be released back into the wild.

These free flight encounters occur at 11.45 am every day of the week. You can learn more about these charismatic characters, their specific behaviors, adaptations, and how to best support their wild cousins through positive, collective actions (like purchasing forest-friendly paper and wood products!)
