Brevard Zoo in Florida has welcomed a new resident, a three-month-old fallow deer named Peach, who will share a habitat with the resident white-tailed deer Plum and Persimmon, as well as the Osceola turkey flock. Peach cannot be released back into her natural habitat, as deer can be a danger to road users, and a community member raised it before it was confiscated and later transferred to a licensed rehabilitation facility. Fallow deer are considered invasive in the US as they compete with native species, such as white-tailed deer, for food.
Spot Our New Deer! – Brevard Zoo
Brevard Zoo is excited to announce the arrival of its latest addition – a female white-tailed deer named Pearl. Visitors can now spot Pearl in the Wild Florida section of the zoo.
Meet Pearl
Pearl is a beautiful two-year-old deer with a distinctive white tail. She was found as an orphaned fawn in the wild, and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission rescued her. Unfortunately, Pearl could not return to the wild due to her dependence on humans for food and care. Therefore, she was transferred to Brevard Zoo, where she can live a comfortable and healthy life.
Integrating Pearl with the Zoo’s Other Animals
Pearl is currently settling in and getting used to her new environment. Brevard Zoo’s animal care team is gradually integrating her with the other animals in Wild Florida, including her new deer friends. Visitors can watch Pearl explore her habitat, nibble on vegetation, and interact with her companions.
Learn about White-Tailed Deer
White-tailed deer are native to the Americas and are named for the characteristic white underside of their tails. These deer typically live in forests and brushlands and can adapt to various habitats. Pearl is a unique example that has found a home at Brevard Zoo.
