Goat Babies Take Their First Leash Walk

Pickles, Avocado, and Wasabi, three Nigerian dwarf goat babies, recently hit an exciting milestone: their first leash walk! Walks around the Zoo are an exciting way to provide petting zoo animals like goats enrichment. All husbandry behaviors at Zoo Atlanta are completely voluntary, and the babies have been working with their Care Team on voluntary haltering and loose leash training over the past few months. After the babies were comfortable and calm with the halter, leash training began and last week they were finally ready to embark on their first walk outside the Outback Station barn!

These Goats are Made for Walking

Goats have been used as a means of transportation in some parts of the world for centuries. While they may not be as popular as horses or cars, they are still a viable option for those who need to get around. Goats can be used for walking, riding, and even pulling carts.

Goats are well-suited for walking because of their sure-footedness. They are able to traverse rocky terrain with ease and can climb steep hills with little effort. Their hooves are also well-adapted for walking on uneven surfaces. This makes them ideal for traveling in areas that are difficult to traverse with other forms of transportation.

Goats are also relatively easy to train for riding. They can be taught to respond to verbal commands and hand signals, making them an ideal mount for those who are looking for a reliable form of transportation. Goats are also strong enough to carry a rider’s weight, making them a great option for those who want to travel long distances.

Goats can also be used to pull carts. Their strong legs and sure-footedness make them ideal for pulling a small cart or wagon. This can be especially useful in areas where roads are not easily accessible or in cases where a vehicle is not available. Goats can also be used to transport goods and supplies over long distances, making them a great option for those who need to transport goods in rural areas.

Goats are also relatively easy to care for. They require minimal amounts of food and water and can live in a variety of climates. They are also relatively inexpensive to purchase and maintain, making them a great option for those who are looking for an affordable form of transportation.
