Zoo Atlanta has welcomed a newborn Western lowland gorilla, born to Shalia on April 24, 2023, two weeks ahead of schedule. The newborn, the 25th gorilla born at Zoo Atlanta since the opening of The Ford African Rain Forest in 1988, is healthy and robust, and its sex is not yet confirmed. The infant is the first offspring of Willi B. Jr., the son of the iconic Western lowland gorilla, Willi B. The birth was recommended by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums’ Gorilla Species Survival Plan. The delivery marked a continuation of the unique Atlanta tradition instituted by Willi B that has seen generations of people grow up with gorillas.
On June 5, Zoo Atlanta welcomed a new addition to its family – a western lowland gorilla! The baby gorilla’s mother, 22-year-old Lulu, gave birth to a healthy male infant, a momentous occasion for the zoo and the conservation of these fantastic animals.
The importance of western lowland gorillas
Western lowland gorillas are critically endangered, with threats including poaching and habitat loss. The global population of western lowland gorillas has decreased by as much as 60% in the last 20-25 years, making every birth a valuable contribution towards their continued existence.
The birth of the baby gorilla at Zoo Atlanta is especially significant as it underscores the success of the zoo’s Gorilla Conservation Program. The baby championed

Looking adorable, the baby gorilla clings to his mother’s belly while she carries him around. He’s currently sized at 4 pounds, but his challenging spirit suggests he’ll continue to grow every day, and so does his personality, allowing him to interact with his day room with his mother and the other gorillas.
The zoo has no plans to name the infant yet, as they traditionally wait a few months before bestowing names on the newborn animals. Still, the baby has already won the hearts of many animal lovers worldwide. As all human newborns’ births are unique, animal newborns are celebrated and cherished similarly.
