What is an AZA Zoo?

An AZA Zoo is an accredited zoo or aquarium that meets the highest standards in animal care and welfare, as set by the Association of Zoos & Aquariums (AZA). AZA-accredited zoos and aquariums provide a fun, safe, and educational family experience. To be accredited by AZA, zoos and aquariums must meet rigorous standards for animal care, veterinary programs, conservation, education, and safety.

The AZA also works to ensure the survival of selected wildlife species through their Species Survival Plan® (SSP) program. This program helps coordinate breeding efforts between different AZA-accredited institutions to maintain healthy populations of endangered species. Additionally, the AZA Population Management Center (PMC) creates Breeding and Transfer Plans with more than 500 SSPs.

Overall, an AZA Zoo is a safe place to visit where you can learn about animals while also helping to ensure their survival.
