Today is International Cuckoo Day, and the Houston Zoo is celebrating its guira cuckoos. Native to South America and often found in open habitats, guiro cuckoos are efficient hunters that eat almost anything they can catch, from worms to small birds. Unlike some cuckoo species that are brood parasites, guiro cuckoos are great parents, with multiple females in a flock sharing a nest and all adults taking turns incubating and caring for the young chicks. The highly vocal birds make various calls, including yodels, guttural calls, gargled trills, and whistles. Visitors to the Houston Zoo can see their flock of 8 guira cuckoos in the Waterbird Aviary in South America’s Pantanal exhibit.
Celebrating International Cuckoo Day – The Houston Zoo
The Houston Zoo is celebrating International Cuckoo Day, dedicated to celebrating one of the most interesting birds on the planet – the cuckoo. For many, the cuckoo bird conjures up images of a clock that makes a noise every hour, but there is much more to these birds than that. Here at the Houston Zoo, we celebrate the beauty and complexity of cuckoo birds and their essential role in ecosystems worldwide.
Why should we celebrate cuckoo birds?
For starters, cuckoo birds are fascinating creatures. These birds are well known for their unique reproductive behavior, which involves laying their eggs in the nests of other bird species. The cuckoo chick hatches and is often fed and cared for by the unwitting “foster parents” of the host species. This behavior is known as brood parasitism and is an evolutionary adaptation that allows cuckoos to lay their eggs without the burden of raising their young.
Cuckoos can also be an important indicator of environmental health. As migratory birds, they can help us track changes in weather patterns and other environmental factors. And by studying the behavior and population dynamics of cuckoo birds, we can learn more about how ecosystems work and how we can protect them.
