Romeo and Zooliet is a family-friendly adaptation produced exclusively for our Zoo and is showing now through August 17th. 👏The Saint Louis Zoo and the St. Louis Shakespeare Festival partnered together for this great production!!
The play tells a story about animals inside the Saint Louis Zoo who mount their own production of Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet.” In this version, the Montagues are herbivores and the Capulets are carnivores. Romeo, a prairie dog, and Juliet, a grizzly bear, become best friends! Instead of dying, they go into hibernation, which I thought was so creative! There were tidbits throughout the play about St. Louis and the Saint Louis Zoo, which was awesome too!
⏰ The show runs 80 minutes without an intermission.
The beautiful animal puppets were designed by Michael Curry Design (known for its work on Broadway’s “The Lion King” and “Frozen” along with Olympic and Super Bowl ceremonies). I think the hippo and the tortoise were my favorite puppet designs, but they were just beautiful.
And, the actors were incredibly talented!! I can’t imagine acting on a stage, let alone puppeteering!! Wow, they were all unbelievable.
We started the evening with dinner, followed by a presentation setting the background for the play and then getting to meet one of the puppeteers. These puppets are just stunning and my kids enjoyed getting to shake hands with the sea lion! My 4yo was a little unsure about the puppets, so this really helped her to see a puppet ahead of the play.
We walked through the sea lion tunnel before the play started!
There are different tiers of tickets that you can choose from (we did tier 1 that had the pre-show experience). This was a great introduction for my kids to Shakepeare and it included humor too!
Overall, we just loved this play and highly recommend it!
