It’s time to celebrate Pride with our favorite pride of lions! 🦁 Here at the Virginia Zoo we have 3 African lions, our male, Ansel, and two females, Asha and Kali.
If you’ve visited the Zoo, you may have only seen Ansel or the two girls on exhibit at a time. This is because after working with the African Lion Species Survival Plan (SSP), it was concluded for the safety and wellbeing of all three animals, a physical introduction was not feasible at this time.
While lions are typically a social species, some individuals, like Ansel, prefer to stay solitary, which can happen in the wild as well. Our animal care team rotates the lions in their habitat equally and regularly, a housing situation that provides a much more comfortable and welcoming environment for all individuals involved.
